Leading Lights Lecture Series

Leading Lights Lecture Series

This lecture series launched in 2023 will bring you information from international experts. It is a combined initiative of the Education & Training and the Research & Development departments and is led by Louise Breslin & Dr. Allison Waters

Aims

  • Facilitate the sharing of knowledge from experts in blood transfusion, and all its allied fields, to the Irish Blood Transfusion Service and its partners
  • Maximise our capacity for developing our services, growing collaborations and challenging the status quo

Our next Leading Lights lecture will take place on 19th April when Dr Jamie Nash, PhD, FIBMS, will join us from the Welsh Blood Service to discuss The Importance of Extracellular Vesicles within Platelet Storage”.

According to Dr. Nash, "Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) are small, nanosized particles that have a vital role in cell to cell communication and an important role in haemostasis. However, their role within transfusion has yet to be fully defined. The lecture will be based around a small section of my PhD addressing what these EVs are within platelet concentrates and the potential role of these EVs. A platelet concentrate has more than ten billion EVs, all of which are transfused to the patient. Defining these EVs may be key to improving the safety and quality of future transfusions."

Please register your interest below. You will receive zoom login details prior to the event. We look forward to you joining us for our next Leading Lights lecture!
