Our Library

The IBTS Library is located on the second floor of the National Blood Centre on the St. James Hospital campus, Dublin 8. We deliver a library & research service and provide access to resources to meet the research and education needs of our staff. We also offer a service to registrars on rotation as well as to visiting students and other health professionals.

Library Collections

We are primarily a specialist library for Transfusion Medicine which covers the collection, testing, processing and preparation of blood and blood components. The library holds text books and journals as well as industry relevant reports, manuals, standards and guidelines. 

Subjects covered by our book and journal collections include: Transfusion, Haematology, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Blood and Platelet Collection, Apheresis, Blood Banking, Cellular Therapy, Tissue/Eye Banking, Donor Recruitment, Donor Psychology/Motivation, Infectious Diseases, Immunology, Nursing, Laboratory Management and Practices as well as general medical reference material. 

Our non-medical book collection has been expanded in recent years to include publications on Leadership, Management, Organisational Behaviour, Human Resources, Marketing, Psychology and Self-Development. 

The library holds articles, publications and theses written by former and current IBTS staff as well as material and a photographic archive on the history of the organisation. 

Visiting the IBTS Library

Health service professionals, students and anyone with an interest in the field of Transfusion Medicine or in the history of the IBTS are welcome to visit and use our facilities free of charge. There are quiet study desks available for use by visitors. 

Please note that access to our collection is "reference only" and books and journals cannot be borrowed by visitors. 

The Library is staffed by a Research Officer/Librarian, Niamh O'Sullivan, and a Library Assistant, Janet Kelleher and is open to visitors by appointment from 10.00am to 4.00pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
