Blood Component Production

Blood Component Production

Our Component Production departments are located in the National Blood Centre (NBC) and the Munster Regional Transfusion Centre (MRTC). We process all the blood that is donated in Ireland.

Whole-blood-and-platelets

Whole Blood

Whole blood is processed in the NBC. It is separated into various components – red cells, platelets and plasma, so that the most use can be made from each precious donation.

Whole blood is first spun in a centrifuge, then separated and finally stored in controlled storage conditions to keep it as fresh as possible for our patients. On occasion it can be processed further into more specialised products for patients with more complex requirements.

All of our whole blood donations are separated within 24 hours of collection, and are available to patients as soon as the next day.

Platelets

Platelets are collected in specialised fixed clinics and are processed at both the NBC and MRTC. The Production teams work efficiently to get the products on the shelves for our hospitals and their practices are supported by the scientists in the Scientific Support and Component Development (SSCD) team.
