Clinical Support & Guidance

The IBTS medical team provides substantial clinical advice and guidance on transfusion medicine and transfusion science related matters and has an open door for acceptance of queries.

We receive on average twenty requests daily which vary greatly in their scope and range, and are very diverse. Examples include:

  • Inventory management
  • Interpretation of laboratory results
  • Appropriate transfusion
  • Alternatives to transfusion
  • Patient blood management
  • Investigation of transfusion reactions
  • Audit and improvement programmes
  • Clinical practice guidelines including
    • Massive Haemorrhage protocols,
    • Transfusion in specific patient cohorts such as foetal, neonatal, sickle cell disease, and stem cell transplant
