NEUROLOGICAL OPERATIONS

NOTES

Dura mater grafts: Donors who have undergone brain or spinal surgery where dura mater grafts may have been employed should be deferred until relevant information can be obtained. Dura mater grafts were not used in the Republic of Ireland after 1st July 1996. Part 3.5.1 details the use of Lyodura by some surgeons in Ireland. Dura mater grafts would not have been used in simple Discectomies or Laminectomies or burr holes for drainage of haematomas. Dura mater grafts were not used in the United Kingdom, Western Europe, North America, Australia or New Zealand after 1992

Brain or spinal surgery in the UK since 01 January 1980: Donors who have brain or spinal cord surgery in the UK including Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man on or after 01 January 1980 are permanently excluded

 ACCEPT:

  • Donors with a history of a cerebral or intracranial (berry) aneurysm resulting in a subarachnoid hemorrhage which was treated surgically in Ireland can be accepted following full recovery as long as they have no neurological deficit and are not under the care of a Consultant Neurologist (and a dura mater graft was not used if the surgery was prior to 01 July 1996). If the surgery was carried out in a non-UK country, or in the UK prior to 01 January 1980, the donor may be accepted if it can be established that a dura mater graft was not used

PERMANENTLY EXCLUDE

  • Donors who have undergone brain or spinal surgery (apart from simple discectomy or laminectomy or burr holes for drainage of haematomas) where dura mater grafts may have been employed until relevant information can be obtained. The donor may be accepted by the Donor Consultant or Consultant Haematologist or their nominees if it can be shown that a dura mater graft was not used during surgery
  • Donors with pituitary tumours, if they have been treated with human desmopressin
  • Brain or spinal surgery in the UK since 01 January 1980
  • Donors who have undergone brain or spinal cord surgery in the UK including Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man on or after 01 January 1980
  • Donors who have undergone burr hole surgery in the UK on or after 01 January 1980
  • Donors who have undergone any spinal surgery in the UK on or after 01 January 1980 where the spinal cord was damaged or the dura mater was breached
