JAUNDICE

JAUNDICE

ACCEPT:

  • If donor had neonatal jaundice
  • If donor had jaundice because of Gilbert’s disease (if donor is not currently jaundiced)
  • If the donor had jaundice or hepatitis before their 13th birthday, from which they have made a complete recovery, even if a definitive diagnosis was not made
  • If they had jaundice on or after their 13th birthday and the jaundice was non-viral in nature and a definite cause was established and the donor made a complete recovery (e.g. the donor had gallstones)

 DEFER:

  • For 6 months after complete recovery if they had jaundice due to hepatitis A, at any age
  • For 6 months after complete recovery if they had jaundice due to glandular fever
  • The donor if they are clinically jaundiced at the donor clinic

 PERMANENTLY EXCLUDE:

  • If donor had jaundice after their 13th birthday and the cause is not known
  • If jaundice was due to viral hepatitis or if the aetiology is unknown 
  • If the jaundice was due to malignancy or the treatment of malignancy

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Many conditions can cause jaundice. The concern is with infectious causes such as viral hepatitis that could be transmitted by blood transfusion
