ACCEPT:
- If donor had neonatal jaundice
- If donor had jaundice because of Gilbert’s disease (if donor is not currently jaundiced)
- If the donor had jaundice or hepatitis before their 13th birthday, from which they have made a complete recovery, even if a definitive diagnosis was not made
- If they had jaundice on or after their 13th birthday and the jaundice was non-viral in nature and a definite cause was established and the donor made a complete recovery (e.g. the donor had gallstones)
DEFER:
- For 6 months after complete recovery if they had jaundice due to hepatitis A, at any age
- For 6 months after complete recovery if they had jaundice due to glandular fever
- The donor if they are clinically jaundiced at the donor clinic
PERMANENTLY EXCLUDE:
- If donor had jaundice after their 13th birthday and the cause is not known
- If jaundice was due to viral hepatitis or if the aetiology is unknown
- If the jaundice was due to malignancy or the treatment of malignancy

- HEPATITIS C VIRUS (HCV)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Many conditions can cause jaundice. The concern is with infectious causes such as viral hepatitis that could be transmitted by blood transfusion
