GUM DISEASE

NOTES

Consider underlying disease. Gum disease may be treated by regular deep cleaning. Donors with recurrent severe aphthous mouth ulceration may have a serious underlying condition, such as an auto-immune disease

NB Bonjela contains choline salicylate. The deferral for aspirin will apply i.e. as it is not known how much of the active ingredient is absorbed topically, if Bonjela has been used in the last 5 days, the donated unit must not be used for platelet concentrate production

ACCEPT:

  • If the donor has a small non-infected aphthous mouth ulcer only and the donor is otherwise well
  • If using an over the counter treatment, e.g. mouthwash and there is no evidence of infection

DEFER:

  • For 24 hours after deep cleaning
  • If there is evidence of an infection
