Including gestational diabetes
ACCEPT:
- If the donor has pre-diabetes
- If the diabetes is controlled by diet alone
- If the donor had gestational diabetes if the pregnancy ended more than 12 months ago, and treatment is not currently required
- If the diabetes is controlled with a Biguanide (an oral hypoglycaemic medication) as a monotherapy e.g. Metformin and the type and dose have not changed in the last 4 weeks and the donor does not suffer from repeated hypoglycaemic episodes
DEFER:
- For 4 weeks if the type or the dose of the medication has changed in last 4 weeks
PERMANTENTLY EXCLUDE
- If the donor requires treatment with a Biguanide e.g. Metformin in combination with other therapies
- If the donor requires injectable medication such as Exenatide (Byetta) or Liraglutide (Victoza)
- if the donor requires treatment with insulin at present or ever required insulin
- if the donor suffers from repeated hypoglycaemic episodes
- if the donor is having problems with feeling faint or fainting
- if the donor has or had complications of diabetes such as eye, renal or cardiac disease, gangrene, or ulcers related to loss of sensation
- If donor had a transplant of pancreatic tissue

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Directive 2004/33/EC has legislative requirement that prospective donors with diabetes who require treatment with insulin are permanently excluded
