NOTES
These conditions are contraindications to donation as the individual may be susceptible to sudden haemodynamic changes e.g. stroke, transient ischaemic attacks, epilepsy, cerebral embolus. In addition, these conditions known or suspected to be of viral origin e.g. multiple sclerosis may also harm the recipient
ACCEPT:
- If diagnosed with Idiopathic (benign) intracranial hypertension and the donor is asymptomatic and off all treatment
- If the donor has a definite diagnosis of transient global amnesia
- If a berry aneurysm has been treated by interventional radiology or surgery (without the use of dural grafting, or after 1992 in the UK) and the person has not had a stroke or suffered neurological deficit, accept
PERMANENTLY EXCLUDE:
If donor has or ever had
- Dementia (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease)
- Any CNS disease of unknown or suspected infective origin (e.g. multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease –CJD)
- Pituitary tumours, even if benign, if they have been treated with human desmospressin
- Neurodegenerative conditions of unknown aetiology
- Stroke OR Subarachnoid haemorrhage OR transient ischaemic attacks/TIAs or cerebral embolus
- Parkinson’s disease
