ANAESTHETIC - DSG -IBTS

NOTES

All donors who have had any anaesthetic, i.e. general, local or sedation for a minor procedure should be deferred for a minimum of 24 hours thereafter. The underlying condition for which the anaesthetic was given may, in itself, be a reason for longer or permanent deferral

DEFER:

  • For a minimum of 24 hours (Local Anaesthetic and Sedation)
  • Defer for 1 week after general anaesthetic

Determine underlying condition:-

  • Minor Surgery: Defer for a minimum of 1 week
  • Major Surgery: Defer for a minimum of 6 months. Note: a clinical decision to reduce this deferral period can be made by RN /MO 

 PERMANENTLY EXCLUDE:

  • If  the donor had a homologous transfusion in the Republic of Ireland on or after 01 January 1980
  • If the donor had a homologous blood transfusion outside the Republic of Ireland at any time
  • If the donor had brain or spinal cord surgery in the UK including Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man on or after 01 January 1980
  • If the donor had undergone burr hole surgery in the UK on or after 01 January 1980
  • If the donor had undergone any spinal surgery in the UK on or after 01 January 1980 where the spinal cord was damaged or the dura mater was breached
