Hereditary spherocytosis is an abnormality of red blood cells (erythrocytes) caused by mutations in genes relating to proteins that allow for the erythrocytes to change shape and subsequently interfere with the cells ability to travel from the arteries to smaller capillaries and also makes them more likely to rupture.
