SIMIAN FOAMY VIRUS

ACCEPT:

 PERMANENTLY EXCLUDE:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This guideline will mainly affect people who handle non-human primates or their body fluids as part of their work, e.g. workers in zoos, veterinary surgeons, workers in research institutions or people who keep monkeys or other non-human primates as pets. Simian Foamy Virus (SFV) is a spumavirus that primarily infects non-human primates. It is named after the foamy-looking cells that are formed from the fusion of neighboring cells following infection. SFV infects a significant number of primates bred in captivity which predisposes them to other viruses. SFV can cross over into humans, although it is not currently known to be pathogenic in humans. Any person who works with the bodily fluids of nonhuman primates is at risk for SFV and therefore pose a risk to the safety of the recipient of their blood
