SARCOIDOSIS

SARCOIDOSIS

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Acute sarcoidosis is normally a self-limiting disease and may not require any treatment. The cause is unknown but there may be an immune defect that is inherited. This uncertainty means that only donors who have recovered for 5 years can donate

Chronic sarcoidosis can cause a range of problems with the lungs and heart that may pose risks for donors. The treatments used may also cause immunosuppression

Directive 2004/33/EC has legislative requirement that ‘prospective donors with serious active, chronic, or relapsing disease’ are permanently excluded

1. ACUTE

DEFER:

  • For 5 years following complete recovery and cessation of therapy

2. CHRONIC

PERMANENTLY EXCLUDE:

  • If donor has chronic sarcoidosis
  • If donor has ever relapsed
