PNEUMOTHORAX

PNEUMOTHORAX

Could be traumatic or spontaneous

DEFER:

  • Until fully recovered and discharged from all follow-up

PERMANENTLY EXCLUDE:

  • If associated with emphysema or cystic fibrosis

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Spontaneous pneumothorax most often affects tall, thin men approx. 20-40 years old. It also affects those with lung disease such as cystic fibrosis, emphysema and tuberculosis. It reduces lung function and decreases the amount of oxygen entering the blood. Therefore donating blood may worsen symptoms

Directive 2004/33/EC has legislative requirement that ‘prospective donors with serious active, chronic, or relapsing disease’ are permanently excluded
