ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum, a silk-like membrane that lines the inner abdominal wall and covers the abdominal organs. It is usually due to a bacterial or fungal infection. It can result from any abdominal perforation (e.g. dialysis or trauma) or as a complication of other medical conditions which are reasons to defer the donor to maintain donor safety. Peritonitis requires prompt medical attention to fight the infection and treat any underlying medical conditions. Treatment usually involves antibiotics and, in some cases, surgery. Left untreated, peritonitis can lead to severe, potentially life-threatening infection throughout the body. Any infection can cause a risk to the safety of the recipient
