OSTEOPOROSIS

OSTEOPOROSIS

PERMANENTLY EXCLUDE:

  • If donor has osteoporosis

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Donors with osteoporosis should be permanently excluded from donating as there is a concern that they would be prone to fracture if they fainted during/after donating

Fosamax and or treatment with Calcium/Vitamins may be used as a prophylactic measure and does not in itself indicate the presence of osteoporosis.  Donors taking prescribed vitamins as a prophylactic measure may be accepted

Directive 2004/33/EC has legislative requirement that ‘prospective donors with serious active, chronic, or relapsing disease’ are permanently excluded
