NOTES

Donors with osteopenia may donate for whole blood but not by apheresis

ACCEPT:

  • If donor has osteopenia even if donor is taking medications for osteopenia (e.g. Fosamax and/or treatment with calcium/vitamins)

DEFER:

  • 12 months after last treatment with Prolia (Denosumab)

PERMANTENTLY EXCLUDE:

  • If on Prolia (Denosumab)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Osteopenia occurs when there is a decreased mineralisation (mainly lack of calcium) of bone. It can occur for many reasons and therefore it is important to ensure it is not associated with any other condition for which the donor would be deferred
