DEFER:

• Until fully recovered and for at least two weeks following cessation of symptoms

NB: It is not necessary to defer donors who have been in contact with individuals who have influenza(even if they have been in close household contact), as long as the donor is well and asymptomatic at the time of donation

It is not necessary to defer donors who have been in contact with individuals with influenza even if the donor is taking Tamiflu or Relenza for prophylaxis, as long as the donor is well and asymptomatic at the time of donation. Ensure that these donors are given the standard post-donation advise as regards reporting post-donation illness to the IBTS
