Hepatitis has many causes including infection (viral, bacterial and parasitic), alcohol abuse, autoimmune disease and inflammation caused by drugs and toxins. The major concern is with viral hepatitis that can be transmitted by blood transfusion. Individuals, who have fully recovered from non-viral hepatitis, where a defined cause has been established, can donate but a temporary deferral period may be required.
