FAINTS

ACCEPT:

  • If donor has a history of faints but they have no other symptoms or sustained injury (NB a history that is not directly associated with donation)

PERMANENTLY EXCLUDE:

  • A donor who has fainted during or after a donation and sustained an injury
  • Donors who have fainted following donation on two consecutive occasions
  • A donor who has had an unexplained delayed faint; i.e. lost consciousness after they have left the blood donation clinic with no obvious reason / contributory factor for the faint other than the donation itself

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

A previous history of fainting/weakness increases the likelihood of faints. If the donor is accepted careful observation is required

New donors: history of being prone to faints – If the donor is accepted careful observation is required

Delayed faint is a faint that occurs after the donor has left the donation venue. Factors that may contribute to a delayed faint could be exertion, strenuous exercise, dehydration, smoking, taking a hot bath or shower or an excessive alcohol intake

All donors who faint (even briefly) or felt faint must be given post donation advice about activities, including driving, to maintain their safety
