DISABLED DONOR

Disabled Donor

NOTES

In the interest of their own welfare, potential donors must not donate in their wheelchairs

ACCEPT:

  • If the underlying cause of the disability does not contraindicate donation and the donor fully understands and consents to the donation process/testing of blood for transmissible disease
  • the donor is sufficiently mobile to climb unaided onto the donation chair and the donor does not require the use of a wheelchair

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

In the interest of their own welfare and safety, potential donors must not donate in their wheelchairs. People who are in wheelchairs are more at risk if they suffer a delayed vasovagal event in the chair as they could remain upright and may suffer prolonged cerebral hypoxia.  This can result in permanent brain injury or in extreme circumstances death.  For this reason donors must not donate from a wheelchair
