CONTACT WITH INFECTIOUS DISEASE

ACCEPT:

  • If the infection is known to lead to permanent immunity (e.g. chickenpox, measles, rubella, whooping cough) and there is a definite history of past infection with the disease with which contact has occurred
  • If donor had contact with common upper respiratory tract infections such as colds, sore throats, influenza, norovirus and other causes of diarrhoea and vomiting IF the donor is well and symptom free (even if donor is taking Tamiflu or Relenza)
  • If the donor had contact with skin conditions (e.g. Impetigo, scabies, ringworm, tinea, hand, foot & mouth) which are not transmissible by donated material IF the donor is symptom free

DEFER:

For 4 weeks, from last contact, after donor had contact with

  • Chickenpox
  • German Measles
  • Shingles
  • Mumps
  • Slapped Cheek (Fifth Disease)

If the donor DID NOT HAVE that infection or does not know if they had that infection

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

It is not necessary to defer donors who have been in contact with individuals who have colds or influenza (even if they have been in close household contact), as long as the donor is well and asymptomatic at the time of donation. It is not necessary to defer donors who have been in contact with individuals with influenza even if the donor is taking Tamiflu or Relenza for prophylaxis, as long as the donor is well and asymptomatic at the time of donation. It is not necessary to defer donors who have been in contact with individuals who have the winter vomiting bug or other causes of diarrhoea and vomiting (even if they have been in close household contact), as long as the donor is well and asymptomatic at the time of donation. It is not necessary to defer donors who have been in contact with skin conditions which are not transmissible by donated material (e.g. scabies, ringworm, tinea), if the donor is well and has no sign of infection. Ensure that these donors are given the standard post-donation advise as regards reporting post-donation illness to the IBTS
