ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Chikungunya Virus (Chik V) is spread by the bite of a mosquito

The most common symptoms of Chikungunya virus infection are fever and joint pain. Other symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rash. Chik V can be transmitted by blood transfusions. The areas in the Caribbean that have had outbreaks of Chikungunya Virus in recent years are tropical and therefore the tropical deferral applies

If the area at risk of Chik V is not tropical, a 28 day deferral period will apply from the time the donor left the at-risk area
