Matthew Downey joined the research team as a research scientist in 2026..

Research Interests

He has been with the IBTS for 5 years, previously working as a Microbiology Scientist in the Quality Department. He earned a BA in Microbiology from Trinity College Dublin and an MSc in Parasitology and Pathogen Biology from Queen’s University Belfast. He research has previously focused on the understanding and awareness of the LGBTQ+ community in Ireland regarding blood donation and eligibility criteria. This survey received significant response from the community and is currently being written up for academic publication. He has a keen interest in transfusion science, donor engagement, bleeding disorders, and LGBTQ+ health research
