Role

I am the scientific lead of the Molecular Biology & Genetics Department, incorporating the National Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics Reference Laboratory (NHIRL) and the Blood Group Genetics Laboratory (BGGL), of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service.Currently, I am responsible for the provision of a comprehensive Molecular Biology & Genetics service of the highest quality, including on-going strategic development in collaboration with clinicians, managers and users of the service. 

Research Interests

Since starting with the IBTS in 1998, I have co-authored a number of papers relating to Hepatitis C, Multiple Sclerosis, HLA types in the Irish population, and the recently submitted - HLA genotypes for the development of pseudotumours around hip resurfacing. Current research includes collaborations with Trinity College Dublin, St James’s Hospital and St George’s, University of London, on immune genes, protective immunity and improved vaccine design for patients with Covid-19; and also with St James’s Hospital and Trinity College Dublin, on immune reconstitution and outcome after allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation and CAR T therapy. I have 8 peer-revewed publications listed on PubMED.
