ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Osteomyelitis is an infection of a bone. Symptoms include pain and tenderness over the affected area of bone, and feeling unwell. It is a serious infection which needs prompt treatment with antibiotic medication. Surgery is usually needed if the infection becomes severe or persistent. It is often difficult to be certain that all infection from osteomyelitis has been eliminated. Deferral of donors for 2 years from full recovery minimises the risk of any infection being passed on through donation thus maintaining recipient safety
Directive 2004/33/EC has a legislative requirement that prospective donors with a history of osteomyelitis are deferred for 2 years following the date of full recovery
